1960 Fury kustom by Chromecop

Viesti Kirjoittaja chromecop » 25.09.2008 18.50

I needed a break from my longtime-project, Mercedes Benz Wrecker, so I looked into my pile of kits and found this old Fury. It needed a little TLC as you can see....
(sorry about that big first picture)

So, with a new #11 and some dremeling along with a major parts inventory here's what it looks like right now.....

Now... Q is, should I let the roof remain stock or should I chop it? Or, should I go all the way and make it a Starbird-inspired Bubble-top Custom???

I still haven't decided on the grille-treatment, but I guess a pretty simple ribbed grille would look decent, right?

And...maybe repeat that theme for the rear?

Any input welcome!

That bubble-top looks very good. I like its long and curvy lines.

Very cool and rare project. I think that only slightly chopped original roof
might be best for that spaceship look. Do you like all custom front and rear treatment better than modified original pieces?
To me it was hard to find original restorable johan 60 Fury, so Modelhaus resin kit was my only possible choice. My Plymouth propaply comes factory stock build. Virgil Exner mopars are so extremely designed from factory that they look custom already with lowered suspension. Altough I am also fan of traditional custom and rod building style. Yeah thats Barris Buick in my profile.
I am very eager to see more pics from your project in future. Are you going to all out full detail build or only curbside. What is your chassis and interior choice? I hope that you will left intact some of factory chrome moldings.
Fins and front cove are so beautifully surrounded originally.

No, i actually prefere the stock look of the '60 Plymouth but, since I happen to have 3 Fury HT's and at least 2 Fury STW's and this one already had had some "plastic
surgery "done to it, I thought why not give it a full custom treatment.

I agree, those early Exner-cars have a really "out there" styling and that's why I find this "challenge" so thrilling! Trying to customize a "factory-custom" even more....
But I still use some "Exner-tricks" with that Imperial headlight-treatment and the fins are extended using '58 Plymouth parts!

I will go "curbside" with this one, mostly because I find it very boring to build chassie and engine! So, the stock floorpan will be sprayed flat black, and that's it!

I will however make a full custom interior. I really enjoy building interiors and I might use an old Revell Parts Pack Interior Set for that purpose!

Unfortunately the stock chrome moldings have been heavily sanded so, at this point I'm not really sure about what to do about it....

Many thanks for Your kind suggestions!

I did some "photo-manipulation" in the PC today. Here's a "photo mock-up" of how it'll look once finished:

Yeah, the more I looked at the old car, the more the "bubble-top talked to me"

Also, cutting off the stock roof improved the "shark-look" I'm after

Still on hold due to a few other interesting builds. Right now I'm doing a 1936 Ford classic custom (old AMT with chopped 3w coupe roof). Maybe I'll take up this build again late next year.....
