Finnish motorsport models

Viesti Kirjoittaja Avalon » 23.04.2007 17.38

Hi there!

Just wanted to introduce myself quickly... I've been collecting (and building models) for some 15 years now and since the past 10 years have focused on Finnish race drivers, my favorites being Keke Rosberg and JJ Lehto.

The pics down here show the main part of my collection, only two of these are hand-built, the others are die-cast. When I moved to Finland, I decided to only take my 1:43-scaled models with me. I've stopped building Tamiyas, Revells and the like, but have picked up building small kits instead.

Mika Häkkinen & Kimi Räikkönen
JJ Lehto
Keke Rosberg

From top to bottom:
Team Rosberg touring cars '95-'06 & Nico Rosberg
Mika Salo & drivers who didn't fit in anywhere else
Ari Vatanen & various WRC cars

Kuva
The two Tameo kits I built myself: JJ's first (the '89 Onyx) and last (the '94 Sauber) Formula One cars

Although I do understand Finnish pretty well and I speak some time, writing is still a real pain, but I'll try to make an effort and open a WIP thread some time (hopefully) soon of Keke's 1981 Fittipaldi F8 (an old FDS kit).
After that I still have some five kits waiting for assembly: Keke's '79 Wolf, '80 Fittipaldi, '84 & '85 Williams and Salo's '99 Ferrari.

I'm dying to find JJ's '91 Dallara and Salo's '94 Lotus - if anyone can help me with those, I'll be glad to hear!

Very nice collection!

I also collect diecast 1:43 models and have also built some of them myself, as well as I build 1:24 kits too. But most of my collection is 1:43 diecast, only my collection theme is a bit different (Opel/Vauxhall/Holden and Lotus cars), but because some Finnish drivers have been racing Opels, I have some same models you seem to have also in my collection. There seem to be still something for you to find... e.g. JJ Lehto's DTM/ITC 1995 Opel Calibra (white/red/yellow) comes in 2 different liveries, a special livery with McDonald's sponsorship was used only in the Helsinki Thunder ITC race and the other races had the Hasseroder beer livery (which wasn't sold in Finland). Minichamps have made a model with both liveries, the Hasseroder and McDonalds for the 1995 JJ Lehto Calibra. As well as the Keke Rosberg 1995 Opel Calibra has 2 liveries, with the alcohol sponsors and another with just a bird from the Hasseroder logo (without the text) if you are interested in these alternative liveries of the cars... :)

I have also one 1:43 model kit still waiting for building about Mika Häkkinen's Formula Opel/Vauxhall Lotus in Marlboro livery, before he went into the British F3 series. As this car is Opel, Vauxhall AND Lotus (it covers 3 of the car makes I collect, all in the same car) and also was driven by Mika Häkkinen, I'm even hesitant to dare to start to build the model (with lots of small resin and metal parts...) :D

Seems that you are one of the category of collectors which removes the cars from the original platform they come with. There seems to be two principles around... :)

(owner of over 300 Opel/Vauxhall/Holden model cars + about 10% of that Lotus models)

Thanks for the tips! I didn't know there was a Formula Opel kit out - must put that on my to-find list too then. Would like to see some pics of it some day.

I am aware of the other models you mentioned, though.
JJ's '96 McDonald's Opel I have at 1:18 (I used to collect those too), but the one Minichamps made at 1:43 is based on a '95 model, which I don't understand at all. It's not realistic, and for this same reason I am not interested in those so-called "presentation models" they do of F1 cars (a year-old car with new livery, what's the point?).
I also have Keke's '95 Opel with the Hasseroder livery at 1:18 but have actually been considering to buy it at 1:43 some day.

I'm glad to hear someone else here is into 1:43 collections. Having looked around here quickly I've seen lots of bigger-scaled models and, while not wanting to offend anyone cos I have seen some cool builds, that doesn't really interest me that much anymore...

I also realize that taking the models out of their boxes means the cars are technically not "mint" anymore, but I collect for my own pleasure, not for having something that is worth x times more in 10 years from now, so I can brag about its value or sell it with a profit.
Things just look much better when one can display cars freely, rather than having them stuck to ugly bases and having to line them up side by side in a straight line. Just my opinion, though

Yes, I agree about the Team Rosberg McDonalds 1996 car. The real car was a 1996 model but the 1:43 Minichamps is a 1995 car... :( I have the 1:43 and the 1:18 versions and the 1:18 is correct and also the one without McDonalds...

Some of my Opel Calibra 1:43 models, where the year model mistake of the McDonald's-car is clearly visible:

(I like to stack them in piles... :) that's one reason I keep the boxes on)

a small part of my 1:43 collection:

Actually I just purchased the complete 1995 Hockenheim Team Rosberg in 1:87 Minichamps at Friday from a collector in Finland (both racing cars and the truck)... I have been starting to be more and more interested in the 1:87 scale as they take less space in shelves... :)

Well, you sure have been buzy too! Nice wallpaper, btw

Seriously though, what are those silver Veedol Calibras? Didn't know they ran Opels in that series too. Was it perhaps part of the 24 Hours of the Nürburgring?

Yes, they are models of a 1994 model DTM Calibra, actually just one car in 2 different liveries for 2 different races which raced in the Nürburgring 24h races in 1998 and 1999 (if I remember correctly). It didn't finish the race though, but it made Opel race later with the DTM Astra in the same race and finally they won it in 2002 or 2003. They had that real silver 24h Calibra also on display in the Essen Motor Show in 1999. I think it might be the same 1994 spec ex Team Joest car JJ Lehto raced in 1995 in the Cliff livery and was probably used by the Joest team in 1994 already, as it has the same wheels and they only built the cars they used in the DTM races. Minichamps made a 1:43 model of the car in both silver liveries. This was the last time the DTM Calibra was used in racing by the Opel works team. And the real car really was a 1994 spec car, even it was raced in 1999.

I know, I know maybe too much about Calibras, but I drive one and have over 50 model cars of it... :) I also went to see the 1996 spec real ITC champion race car in the Opel factory couple of years back... :)

Not at all, my fave cars are touring-, GT- and sports-cars and I always find it interesting to hear about the history of race cars. I knew about the successes of the Astra in the 24 Hours, but didn't know they used the Calibra as a testbench first too.

How did you manage to get into the factory then?

They have a permanent car show there, where the cars on display are changed from the factory collections. Now its bigger. I have been visiting there twice actually... but I just contacted them by email, as at the time the place was officially closed for summer holidays as we were organising a club tour for the Opel Club Finland, where I'm one of the staff members.

I have also purchased many of my Opel model cars from the Opel factory in Rüsselsheim.

Cool! When I was studying for my degree in car mechanics, we went on a week long trip to visit different factories in France and Germany, and Opel was one of them. Unfortunately we didn't get to see any museums, just boring assembly lines. I think they did mention something about the OPC being built at the time - must've been '98 or '99 - could that be possible or is memory playing tricks with me?

This model (a Technomodel 1:43 kit of Salo's 2007 12 Hours of Sebring Ferrari 430 GT2) I finished a couple of months ago... F****d up the the lines between the roof and the rear window and windshield, so better luck with the other kits I got waiting of this model (Vilander's 2006 ALMS, Salo's 24 Hours of Spa 2006 & Salo/Vilander 24 Hours of Spa 2007)!

At the moment I'm working on a Tameo kit of Rosberg's 1984 Williams FW09 Honda & (based on a Minichamps die-cast model) Alén's 1995 ITC Alfa Romeo 155 in McDonald's colors

I can see you have a system in your organization!
It was hard to find pics on the 'net (only found two), but luckily they covered pretty much every corner so I knew where to put the decals. Not a fan of McDonald's, but the livery works real well, I have to admit.

Finally managed to finish this model: Keke's 1984 Williams FW09 Honda, in an early-season version. This almost 25-year-old Meri kit has given me more headache than pleasure, actually. Don't feel my skills have been fully up to the job (of dealing with crudely cast metal and brittle decals), but it'll have to do for now. One day I suppose I'll get me a Tameo version!

I'm having much more fun with my Racing43 Subaru Impreza 555 of Vatanen, which should be finished soon. In the meantime, I've started already on a Tecnomodel FIA GT 2006 Ferrari F430

Finished Ari's Impreza 555 which he premiered at the 1993 1000 Lakes, a Racing43 model.
The wheels are still temporary because the rubber tires had gotten as hard as rocks and rendered useless. If anyone knows of a Finnish store (preferably in Helsinki) where I can get a new set of rubber racing tyres (in 1:43), I'll be happy to hear about it!

Awesome impreza, nice to see someone building also 1:43 rallycars. What blue you used on that?

I'm afraid that rims are too big also, so you need to change them too. Too big rims seems to be a typhical fault in Racing43 models :banghead:
Propably it would be easier to buy some cheap diecast model which would have suitable rims and tyres. Solido and Altaya rallymodels, for example, are kinda reasonably priced. I bought some of them for about 10 euros from a discount. I found it hard to find nice gravel rally tyres and rims for 1:43 cars.

I don't know whether there was a tarmac stage at 1993 1000 lakes rally or not. If there was, you just need new tyres. I have Valentino Rossis WRC Corolla which should have suitable tarmac tyres, I can sell it if you like. Mail me if you're interested.
